Laser Safety

The Laser Safety Program is intended to reduce the risk of injuries associated with the use of lasers by establishing procedures for working with lasers. Below is the basic syllabus for laser use. Questions regarding the Laser Safety Program should be directed to Environment, Health and Safety by emailing [email protected].

All lasers designated as Class 3B or 4 are required to fill out a Laser Equipment Registration and a Standard Operating Procedure. All personnel who use these lasers must complete Laser Safety training in BioRAFT/SciShield, which is assigned based on the Job Activities assigned to the individual.

Laser Safety training includes the nature of laser emissions, how lasers are classified by relative hazard, administrative and engineering controls, protective equipment, non-beam hazards and accident reporting. It is recommended for all laser users, but required for class 3B or 4 laser users.

To determine if your laser is class 3B or 4, please see the chart on this page, or contact research Safety at [email protected].
